Gov. Mark Sanford names state legislators who stand with him in limiting government overspending as he vetoes much of the South Carolina budget. It's time to vote out of office legislators who can't quit spending money we do not have.
Here are Gov. Sanford's comments: With our vetoes of the state budget now public, I write today to ask you make one more call, write one more email, and encourage one more friend or family member to urge their legislators to take a stand tomorrow for responsible budgeting.
We've chosen to reject much of this year's legislative budget for the way it spends $350 million in stimulus funds without addressing an equal amount of state debt, and for the way it passes up a prime opportunity to make long overdue reforms to state government. Given we've now said our peace, it’s up to you to persuade your respective representatives in Columbia to support our vetoes tomorrow.
Several legislators have stood with us on the side of responsible budgeting. In the House, they include Representatives Ballentine, Bedingfield, Crawford, Duncan, Haley, Hamilton, Huggins, Lowe, Merrill, Millwood, Nanney, Ted Pitts, Rice, Scott, Simrill, Murrell Smith, Garry Smith, Stewart, Stringer, Thompson, Toole, Viers, and Young. In the Senate, Bright, Bryant, Campsen, Cleary, Davis, Grooms, Massey, Mulvaney, Rose, Ryberg, Shoopman and Verdin voted to avoid the mistakes of the past and go back to the drawing board with respect to the state budget.
If your legislator is listed above, they deserve your thanks. If you don't see your Senator or Representative's name, I’d urge you to contact them and simply ask "why?"…
Why spend every single dime of the stimulus money headed our way, instead of dedicating just 10 percent of it to paying down state debt that would generate a much-needed dividend for future generations - $162 million in the first two years alone?
Why put our state's financial future on shifting sands by creating a potential $920 million hole in the budget two years from now?
Why miss the opportunity to make long overdue reforms, like restructuring, that our state so desperately needs?
Why force South Carolinians to continue paying 136 percent the national average for government because of inefficiency and plain old waste - including government running golf course parks at a $500,000 yearly loss and moving the state’s Aeronautics Commission to a new agency and losing out on $350,000 in savings?
Picking up the phone and asking your state legislators these questions I believe speaks to the larger notion of where we want to go as a state, and as a nation. Somewhere, somehow, we have got to begin to redeploy some of the principles that made our nation great. Key among these is this notion of stewardship - of leaving the world a better place for our children rather than recklessly handing them the bill for unsustainable government growth.
The energy and passion I saw at Tea Parties across the state last month can - and indeed must - be translated into tangible ways that each one of us can impact the political process. For just as our Founding Fathers pushed back against a tyranny that turned a deaf ear to their concerns about taxation without representation, I believe we're now at a gut check point as South Carolinians with respect to this very state budget, and the vetoes I'm asking you help us sustain over the next 24 hours.

Rabbi Lau, himself a child survivor of the Holocaust, stated that the current Pope “made two grave mistakes, in my opinion, in his relations with us over the past year, casting a shadow over the entire issue. First, he agreed to reinstate Bishop Richard Williamson, who denied the Holocaust, and who said there was no systematic murder of Jews. [Williamso said that what happened was that ‘only’ 200 to 300,000 Jews died in the war, but not in the Holocaust, because he says there was no Holocaust. He also said there were no gas chambers. The pope agreed to reinstate him after he apologized – but even then he didn’t retract his words, but said only that he wouldn’t have said them if would have known that they would offend his friends in the Church…”
Pope Benedict’s second grave error, Rabbi Lau said, “was at the Durban II conference two weeks ago. Everyone knew that it would be a stage for incitement against Israel and that the star would be [Iranian President Mah Ahmadinejad… But despite this, the pope announced that his representatives would attend and that he blesses the participants. Many countries boycotted the conference, including the U.S., Poland and Germany, but the pope sent a delegation. The European delegates who were there left the hall when Ahmadinejad spoke – but not the pope’s delegates. They remained there throughout the whole speech.”
Despite the above, Rabbi Lau says, “We must not rebuff the visit. We need not bend over backwards or flatter him, but it should not be rejected. This is a visit initiated by the pope himself so that he can follow in the footsteps of his predecessors. We must welcome him, if only for the fact that millions of Jews still live in the Diaspora, and many of them in places where the Catholic Church is strong, such as Latin America, Poland, Ukraine and elsewhere. Gov. Sanford Issues Statement on National Day of Prayer
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Gov. Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on today's National Day of Prayer:
"Today is a reminder of just how important it is to take a few minutes each day both to thank God for the blessings we enjoy, and to ask for help and guidance for ourselves and those around us," Gov. Sanford said. "We are remarkably blessed as a nation, but at the same time some very profound needs do exist around us, be it with the effects of the global economic slowdown or with recent disasters like the fires on the eastern side of our state or the tornados on the western side. Whether you choose to mark this occasion publicly or privately, I'd ask every South Carolinian to take just a few minutes to join Jenny, the boys and me in indeed making today a day of prayer for those around us."
Tomorrow (May 7), following the National Day of Prayer Service, members of Congress and leaders of faith-based groups will hold a bipartisan press conference to affirm America’s Christian heritage, as outlined in America’s Spiritual Heritage Resolution (H.Res. 397), and to address President Obama's recent statement, made while visiting Turkey, that "we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation...."
Anita Staver, President of Liberty Counsel, will participate in the press conference, along with Rep. J. Randy Forbes (R-VA), Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-NC), Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL), and other members of the Congressional Prayer Caucus. Leaders of other faith-based organizations will also stand with the members to affirm America's rich religious heritage.
President Obama’s major proposed alteration in the Saudi peace plan is for Arab countries to grant citizenship to approximately five million Arabs who are descendants of former Israelis while allowing them the right to move to a new Palestinian Authority country.
The Saudi plan calls for them to be allowed to immigrate to Israel, a suggestion that virtually every Israeli leader categorically rejects. President Obama also reportedly told the king that he wants the United Nations flag raised over holy sites in eastern Jerusalem, where the PA would have total sovereignty under the Saudi plan. Historical preservation amendment defeated in Greenville County Council
Good news! Ten council members voted no! Thanks to those who attended the Press Conference, attended the Council Meeting, notified friends, and those who contacted council members by email, phone, or in person. Without citizen involvement, this amendment may have passed as indicated in the Greenville News. Even Council Member Jim Burns, who was pushing the amendment, decided to vote against it.
The Greenville News today reported the following:
The overwhelming majority of Greenville County Council agreed with the opposition movement Tuesday, reversing course and killing a proposal that would have removed the requirement for a property owner to give his consent before his property is designated historic.
The council had previously approved the measure, and no one spoke in opposition at an earlier public hearing.
More recently, however, Councilwoman Judy Gilstrap said she was “inundated” with calls urging her to oppose the measure, though she said Tuesday she was on the fence before voting with nine others to deny the change.
Democratic council members Xanthene Norris and Lottie Gibson supported it.
At issue are local historic sites such as Campbell's Covered Bridge and Lincoln Cemetery that could get shined up with state money – but only if the county changes its historic preservation ordinance to match state rules, said Weylin Brown, chairman of the council-appointed Historic Preservation Commission.
Butch Taylor, president of the Greenville County Taxpayers Association, said allowing a property to be designated historic without the consent of the owner would put home improvements and other changes under the oversight of the commission, a power he said is greater than eminent domain.
Brown said only major changes to historic property – construction that requires a permit – would be subject to commission approval, and that property owners could appeal those decisions.
Councilman Bob Taylor said Tuesday there are other ways to get grant money for improvements on historic sites, and that requiring local governments to take away property rights in order to get money is one way of bribing them to go along with the growing size of government overall.
Councilman Fred Payne said he tried to add a provision that would have said no new regulations would apply to property owners that didn't consent to a historic designation, but that state officials disagreed with it.
There was no other discussion before the roll call vote.
County officials say veterans and freeman slaves are buried in the overgrown graves at Lincoln Cemetery.
Resident Dean Allen told council members after Tuesday's vote that if the graves need repair he knows of volunteers with the Sons of Confederate Veterans who can do the job without involving taxpayer money.

As the king of late night comedy, Jay Leno has few living peers. He is watched and beloved by millions of American viewers, which makes it difficult to understand his support for an organization that seeks to shut down facilities that have as their sole purpose to give a home and guidance to young ladies who find themselves pregnant with nowhere else to go.
On April 29 Jay Leno and his wife are hosting a fundraiser for the Feminist Majority Foundation, a radical pro-abortion group that not only advocates for abortion on demand, but also for the closing of pro-life pregnancy centers.
This month the Feminist Majority Foundation sent an e-mail to its 400 campus affiliates planning a nationwide protest against facilities that dare to offer women alternatives to abortion and the support they need to choose life.
Andrew Smart, CEO of Duke Sandwich Co., launched his bid April 2 for the fourth district congressional seat held by Bob Inglis.
Smart criticized Republicans for having strayed from the principles of Ronald Reagan that once made the party strong: massive over-spending and unprecedented growth of government. To succeed, Smart said, we need to renew our membership in Congress by offering the very best true conservative candidates, who are fully committed to voting those ideals we all believe in. Our district is one of the most conservative in the nation, but we are not represented that way.
Smart and his family attend Taylors First Baptist Church, and Dr. Frank Page, the congregation’s pastor and former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, introduced Smart.
Dr. Page said he believes our nation is in trouble, that we are in desperate need of leaders who can be effective in the public square. “We are in a socialist agenda that is driving us into bankruptcy, and a moral decline.”
Page said Smart and his wife Julie love the Lord and love our church, this country and the state. Smart referred to Dr. Page as “a true conservative leader, a mentor, friend, Christian brother.”

Henry McMaster, the South Carolina attorney general, told Upstate Republican Women meeting at the Poinsett Club March 17 that the state legislature is wrestling with budget cuts, and that tax revenues are not coming in as they did previously. He noted that the state’s unemployment rate is second highest in the nation.
McMaster, an unannounced candidate for governor, wants to abolish parole in South Carolina like in Virginia and other states. Criminals, except for those convicted of committing violent crimes, would have to serve at least 85 percent of their sentence before appearing before the parole board.
SC House Republicans protect religious freedom

One of the most sacred rights that countless South Carolinians have fought and died for is religious freedom. The great leaders in our country's history have been guided by faith that was nurtured over the years in homes, communities and schools. Today, elected officials continue to be buoyed by their strong faith as they make tough decisions during difficult times.
But religious freedom on college campuses has come under attack by Democrats. The massive Democrat spending bill, or so-called stimulus package, recently signed into law by President Barack Obama prohibits funds to renovate buildings on college campuses from being used for buildings with any type of religious connection. Our own U.S. Senator Jim DeMint has called the bill "a direct attack on students of faith."
The South Carolina House Republican Caucus believes strongly in protecting religious freedom and will not allow students to come under attack. That's why House Republicans voted today to safeguard religious freedom on college campuses in South Carolina. According to an amendment passed with overwhelming support from House Republicans, state supported colleges receiving federal stimulus stabilization funds must continue to support and maintain existing student programs and facilities used for religious activities.

Yesterday, while debating the Omnibus spending bill, the U.S. Senate took up Sen. Roger Wicker's (R-Miss.) amendment to preserve what has become fairly commonplace in federal budgeting, the prohibition of U.S. taxpayer money being used through the United Nations to underwrite China's one-child policy in which women are coerced into having abortions and are forcibly sterilized.
Unfortunately, the Senate defeated this amendment by a vote of 55-39, with three Democrats, Sens. Robert Casey (Pa.), Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), and Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) supporting the pro-life amendment.
The Omnibus is frozen in the Senate right now due to fiscal considerations coming from a surprising corner--the Democrats' side. Same-Sex Couples in Massachusetts File Suit Challenging Federal Defense of Marriage Act
The radical group called Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) has filed suit in the Federal District Court in Boston on behalf of several same-sex couples, claiming the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional. The suit challenges only that portion of the federal DOMA that prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage through the provision of federal benefits, including Social Security, filing joint tax returns, federal employee and pension benefits, and the issuance of passports.
President Barack Obama has pledged to work to repeal DOMA. Those tasked with defending this lawsuit will be the new Attorney General, Erik Holder, and the Department of Justice.
Liberty Counsel will be filing a brief in defense of the federal DOMA. Liberty Counsel has successfully defended DOMA and has also successfully defended traditional marriage in over 40 cases.
If black people continue to accept the corrupt blame game agenda of liberal whites, black politicians and assorted hustlers, as opposed to accepting personal responsibility, the future for many black Americans will remain bleak.
Netanyahu has warned foreign leaders not to invest
in Gaza while Hamas still attacks Israel
United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday pledged $900 million in aid to the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, including $300 million for rebuilding Hamas-controlled Gaza.
Prime Minister-designate Binyamin Netanyahu has warned foreign leaders not to invest in Gaza while Hamas still attacks Israel with rockets and bombs at the separation barrier, however. Secretary Clinton maintained that the aid will flow on the condition the condition that none of it would reach Hamas despite a long history of Hamas putting its hands on foreign money, weapons and United Nations humanitarian aid.
“We have worked with the Palestinian Authority to install safeguards that will ensure our funding is only used where and for whom it is intended and does not end up in the wrong hands," Clinton said at the international donors’ conference in Sharm el-Sheikh. South Carolina Federation of Young Republicans
On behalf of the South Carolina Young Republicans I want to thank you all for taking part in South Carolina's first Tea Party Protest. It was a huge success because the new leaders of tomorrow are in the YR movement today. I want to personally thank Rep. Garry Smith, Rep. Wendy Nanney, Rep. Tommy Stringer, and Rep. Dan Hamilton for standing with us in this effort. They truly understand the importance of serving the people and the importance that the YRs have in our political process.
I also want to thank those YRs who have consistently rose to the occasion since the beginning of the SC YR movement nearly two years ago and through them we have seen real results. They all have been there from the beginning in 2007 and have never faltered in any way. They never asked for credit and they have always showed real leadership in times when it was not going so well. I have had the privilege to work with since the outset and count it an honor to work with in the trenches. Some of these YRs have come in after the organization of the SCFYR but they have joined the team and have brought their talents and leadership to the team.
I want to recognize these YRs for their activism, leadership, and potential.

Without these YRs the SCFYR and the UYRs would not be where they are today. The SCFYR is one of the fastest growing YR groups in the Nation. And I can proudly say that we are the most conservative State YR Federation in the country.
I am so proud of them and I wanted them to get the recognition they deserve. Especially after last night's Tea Party where over 2000 of our closest Conservatives Friends joined us to change the party, state, and country. I can not reiterate what these YRs mean to the organization and I am encouraged that with young people like this all across our state and nation that we are in for real conservative change and we should be comforted in this fact.
I also want to thank Chairman Samuel Harms for his support of the UYRs in Greenville. Without the support of Chairman Harms it would be very difficult to operate so I thank him. I also would like to thank State Executive Committeeman Doug Wavle. His support has never faulted and his advice has been exactly what we needed. Mr. Wavle has been the one of the reason the SCFYR has the respect of so many around the state because he understands our role in SC. I cant thank these two gentlemen enough. They have showed their support and respect for the YRs and I can only hope that it will continue in the future.
I am looking for greater things to come from the GCGOP and the UYRs in the future. By working together we can build a greater party and bring outside Conservatives in. They are ready to come in. But are we ready to do what it takes to bring them in?
I pray that we are.

Constituents thank Sen. Jim DeMint for fighting
When Sen. Jim DeMint dropped by to address the Upstate Republican Women’s luncheon meeting Jan. 16 at the Poinsett Club, he was met with a standing ovation. The visibly moved senator said the standing ovation was like “getting an infusion of energy,” as “Washington is sucking the life out of me.”
The senator went on to say that “a few years ago people would say, why didn’t you do this or why didn’t you do that, now they just grab my arm and say, ‘Thanks for fighting.’ ”
The senator said that the nation’s only hope is that people and groups be informed and activated and start calling their government to account. He goes to talk radio and Fox News to make his case directly to the American people.
During last year’s debate over immigration reform, GOP congressional leaders gave copies of the legislation to talk show hosts and bloggers, which they read, posted on the web and told their listeners what was contained in the bill. In response, millions of angry Americans called or e-mailed their representatives and defeated that bill.
GOP leaders did the same with legislation about earmarks and the offshore drilling moratorium. Sen. DeMint said that this has even helped put a spine in some Republican legislators who were sitting on the sidelines waiting to see which way the wind would blow.
“We can decide which way the wind blows if we let Americans know what is really going on,” he said.
Sen. DeMint said that a lot of people in Washington do not understand that people make the economy work, and that free markets, not the government, create jobs. The President and his advisers have not participated in the private markets, started their own businesses and signed the front of a paycheck.
“I think most Americans understand intuitively that something is wrong, Sen. DeMint said, and “as long as we have people out here who believe, we can turn things around no matter what Washington does.”
Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), the House Majority Whip, has promised to make Sen. DeMint a project for defeat when he runs for reelection in 2010. “Many think that South Carolina moved to the left in the last election,” Sen. DeMint said. “We need to show them that South Carolina hasn’t.”
Sen. DeMint said that in Mark Sanford, “we have a governor who understands that you cannot spend your way out of problems. You have to set priorities and cut spending and create a good business environment. I think he is pulling a lot of the legislature along with him, some kicking and screaming, but he is out there fighting for what I think is the right cause for Republicans.”
Sen. DeMint asked URW members to go onto his web site at JimDeMint.com and subscribe to his e-mail updates. He wants to counter negative campaign ads in the coming campaign, which he said will accuse him of voting against children, veterans and farmers.
